Last night I read an interview with Kousaku Yokota in Shotokan karate magazine issue 112. I hadn’t looked at this issue yet and a friend recommended that I look at this interview. He described it as one of the most honest he had ever seen from a high ranking Japanese karate-ka.

He was right, it is a very good interview, I don’t agree with all he says but it is good to see someone not just towing the party line.

One point he makes is about the effectiveness of the fighting methods of Shotokan opposed to kyokushin and judo. He doesn’t say anything really new but it is good to hear that he doubted the training like so many of us do and questioned which was the best method. It would have been interesting to hear his thoughts on boxing and MMA but unfortunately the article doesn’t go that far.

He also talks about the instructors course and says how it was some of the toughest training he had ever done but it was not a course about instruction, which disappointed him.

If you haven’t read it, I’d recommend you do, one of the few interviews I have read that actually has an opinion!
